I watched him leave the starting gate. I took his picture has he was coming by me, his last steps as a great racehorse. Then he started slowing down, and I thought, Barbaro, The Triple Crown, you can't catch up! Then it all started coming apart. The equine ambulance entered the field and I knew it was not good. The dreaded blue shield went up and I thought OH NO! Thankfully they loaded him and took him from the track. The race had continued, but no one paid any attention. The grief, the dark cloud over the field, was almost too much to bare. I will never forget that day as long as I live. In the days that followed and the great surgeon, Dr. Richardson, performed his magic, there was hope, however small. We, maybe, hoped too much. We had fallen in love with this horse. When we lost him on 1-29-07 I was numb. So close, yet so far. His leg healed, but the laminitis had gotten him. That dreadful disease. I know now that God had a bigger task for Barbaro, the legacy he was to leave and the work we were to carry on after he was gone. I donate regularly on behalf of Barbaro. He changed my life that fateful day at Pimlico, though I didn't know it at the time. I have my own personal motto, IF BARBARO CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT. I miss him every day. I know he was going to be the next Triple Crown winner. That is hardly important now. What's important to me, and thousands of others, is that we carry out his mission. I have vowed to do that because he was so special, so smart, and so worthy of our dedication to him. I thank the Jacksons for sharing him with us, and allowing us into their private world of grief. I'm looking forward to visiting Barbaro at Churchill Downs. It will be like visiting an old friend whom I haven't seen since May 20, 2006. It will be good to see him again, and update him on the progress that has been made on his behalf. RIP dear Barbaro. Thanks for all you've done.

Comment on It's What You Can't See by Gloria IL

I purchased a rescue Thoroughbred horse from a non for profit rescue and I was told that he would be sound for riding in 2 weeks after I brought him home. His name was Image of Approval and I fell in love with him because he was such a dear loving horse. I treated him like they told me as far as getting him better so I would have a wonderful trail horse but at the end of the 2 weeks he was no better. I called my vet out to look at him and they took xrays of his front left fetlock and to my dismay he had a completly crushed sesamoid bone in the fetlock and was foundering on the other front foot because of him putting all of his weight on that leg. My vet called it the Barbaro affect and that the only humane thing for me to do was to put him down. I cried so hard because I really had fallen in love with Image in just the short time that I had him because he had such a wonderful personality and just wanted to be loved. I write this in his memory and I know that I will see him again on the other side of the rainbow bridge. I love you Image.

Comment on BARBARO'S Message to the BARBAROMANIACS

The race when Barbaro got hurt was the first horse my 14 year old daughter had really sat and watched. You see she had just started working for a Thoroughbred owner in Ohio, training his young for their ground manners. He told that he wanted her to watch the race and help him decide who to breed one of his mares with, you can guess that she wanted it to be Barbaro, from the first minute that she saw him in the paddock. She was devastated when he got injured and is even worse since he had to euthanized. She has pictures of him every where in her room, on her school folders, and on the computer. She is such a big supporter of his and of horses everywhere! We are aginst horse slaughter and have been since buying our first horse. We have saved 10 horses from slaughter in past 6 years. It is not a lot of horses, but we do what we can for the horses we all love!

Comment on Bobby's Guardian Angel by Melissa Harden

Barbaro.....my eternal flame.....
The very first time I set eyes
on Barbaro, was on a television newscast, after he won the Kentucky Derby,.... it was at that very moment, a flame was lit, in the centre of my soul... a flame, which grew warmer and
brighter with each passing moment.....
The catastrophic events, which followed, in weeks to come, caused me much saddness and pain, but the flame within my soul, grew warmer and brighter and the Love grew stronger, with each passing day..... since Barbaro has moved into another space, his spirit continues to grow to immeasurable proportions..... Barbaro's
presence and his aura, have permeated so many souls and awakened so much awareness, love and compassion..... is this not something we all must learn from? Rest in Peace, Sweet Prince !
..... until we meet again, I send my Love to you, by carrying on, as your ambassador .............

Comment on THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL by Sharon Crumb (Sharonlynn)

I followed BARBARO from the time he was injured to the day he ascended in to HEAVEN. I was devastated when he left us. I think of him everyday and also Dr. Richardson and Staff. They loved him too.
