BARBARO's TRIBUTE TO LOST IN THE FOG
by WM & Cle Shaw (Inspired by Bobby Jackson's Big Heart) August 21, 2006

Remember the good times friends have together.
That's what helps endure all kinds of weather.
Who knew what time her story would tell,
As Barbaro gets better to bid farewell.
He sees like we do that Lost In The Fog,
Spend time with Greg Gilchrist & the family dog.

While our Bobby enjoys more freedom each day,
Grazing on grass and prize Timothy mix hay.
He understands what it means for best friends apart.
He whinnies so softly that you're just as smart.
He'll whisper some prayers your pain stays at bay.
Let His Light of Hope keep fears and doubts away.

He knows what it is like to suffer the blues,
He wishes so much better recovery cues.
Though times may be tough in the weeks ahead,
Maybe months left to rest in your special bed.
Just enjoy your time breathing fresh air and love.
Heaven's own gift to you from ALL His Angels above.

Amazing grace how sweet the sound that plays a tribute for you,
You were the best sprinter of any horse we knew.
Until Barbaro came of age and ran alongside your race.
In sleep's dreams you'll relive Bay Shore's first place.
2005 was your winning year with Eclipse Award.
Spending quiet times with your traineris more reward.

Why do you mean so much to Greg?
Is a horse more than speed of leg?
What makes Barbaro and Lost In The Fog the same?
Are they not greater than horse flesh by name?
Why do we find it so hard to understand,
The answer stares squarely upon one's own hand.

A horsewhisper for Barbaro can clearly foresee,
These two extraordinary horses are like you and me.
That's what Gilchrist knew all along,
when Lost In The Fog won more than furlong,"
"This horse is like a brother to me"
Replied Greg to ESPN and Horseracing TV.

Continuing Lost In The Fog's tribute he finds,
These immortal words that might change others' minds--
"More respect for this horse than most people I deal with"
"If he were human...you want to be around him"--no myth.
It will be a tough time for him to bear,
While Lost In The Fog gets top home care.

Returning to Golden Gates Fields Sunday mid-noon,
Barbaro sends his best wishes to be with Greg soon.
The two will find time like Mike Matz and Barbaro.
The bond between trainer and horse beyond high and low.
Let us not shed sorrowful tears today,
Rather rejoice in their union as we pray.

If there's something to learn when all's said and done,
Barbaro's Champion spirit sends blessings to everyone.
"Celebrate each day as if it were your last"
"Take nothing for granted in the present or past."
"Find joy in the day's moments shared together with you."
Barbaro whispers, "dearest Eclipse Sprinter like Seattle Slew."

So with horsewhispering wisdom left here to see,
"May you be as pampered like they do me at NBC."
"Your groom Pascual Garcia will caress you with love."
"Just as Seabiscuit, Your Honor, Secretariat above."

"Horse Owner's Prayer" - Author Unknown

      Dearest God in Heaven,
give me strength to guide my horse.
Make my hands soft and my head clear.
Let my horse understand me and I him.

My heart, you have blessed with a special love of these animals,
let me never lose sight of it.
My soul, you have gifted with a deep need for them,
      let that need never lessen.

Always, let my breath catch as the sun gleams on an elegant head.
Always, may my throat tighten at the sound of a gentle nicker.

Let the scent of fresh hay and a new bag of grain always be sweet to me.
Let the warm touch of a warm nose on my hand always bring a smile.

I adore the joy of a warm day on the farm.
The grace and splendor of a running horse,
the thunder of its hooves makes my eyes burn and my heart soar,
      let it always be so.

Dearest God, grant me patience, for horses are harnessed wind and wind can be flighty.
Let me not frighten or harm them,
instead show me ways to understand them.

Above all, Dear God, fill my life with them.
When I pass from this world, send my soul to no heaven without them.
For this love you have given me graces my existence and I shall cherish it and praise You for it for all time.

Found this heartwarming update from Godmom 2 that is worth mentioning to bring everyone up to speed on how LITF and Greg Gilchrist are doing...

Here is an update on Lost In The Fog that was posted by Vic Stauffer to the Del Mar Racing Fan Forum. Vic is a racecaller in California and Florida. He visted with Greg Gilchrist at Foggy's stable. Note the reference to a delivery of a basket of goodies and Mr. Gilchrist's gracious acceptance. Very nice story from a very nice guy.

      Sunday Aug 27, 2006 (FROM GODMOM2)

I went and saw Lost In The Fog today. He looked in great spirits and oblivious to the challenge ahead. I was thinking that's one great thing the horses have on us.

I told Greg Gilchrist how much I admired his dedication to his horse. But moreso how great he's been with the media and fans thoughout this champions career.

He and Mr Aleo clearly got it. And understood how much fun was to be had and how to rejoice in a once in a lifetime horse.

I believe they should hold their heads high.

As I was standing talking to Gilly a woman and her teen daughter walked up with a basket of apples and carrots, a card and a sketch that the girl had drawn of LITF.

Greg was so classy in how he greeted them. Took time to answer all their questions and just as they were about to leave ask them if they'd like to meet the horse. You should have seen the look on their faces as they walked under the shedrow.

I'm a pretty hardened racetracker and I thought I was gonna start blubbering and got the heck out of dodge.

Just another example that our sport is the best of them all. And our horses and horsemen are to be treasured.

How about a photo in a year of Barbaro and Lost in The Fog both standing in KY.

Longshot? Of course but they hit everyday.

I was blessed to have called them both to stakes wins at Gulfstream.

Tonight I say an extra prayer for them both.

COMMENT: Thank you for giving us this update on Lost In The Fog as we get ready for another prayer vigil Wednesday evening August 30, 2006 at 7PM EST to keep those like Barbaro and Lost In the Fog in our thoughts and meditations....blessings... Anonymous.

"Let's be ALERT to that and correct the quality of our own thoughts so that we can maintain the knowledge that God is healing all these animals, right in the midst of what appears to be illness. We must not "buy into" the false "picture" of The Fog, or of Bobby, or of any other "ill" animals. The Fog is, and always has been, in God's Loving Protection. We must continue to "see" and affirm that. Our efforts must be redoubled now, w/o losing focus on Bobby.

We need to hold to the Truth of God's healing power for The Fog. God never created sickness, disease, etc. We can raise our thought above the "picture" of illness and "see" The Fog in his True Perfect Being, that God created. He is a reflection of God, which cannot be touched by this claim of C.

It's too bad that we can't express this on the main board to encourage those who have a tendency to affirm the opposite of health and healing because of their sadness. When we wallow in sadness, we throw the weight of our thought on the wrong side. I know many would be encouraged if we could say something again over there. I might try to sneak in a few uplifting comments later, because I notice that people are STILL mentioning Foggy on the main board, but they're not talking positively; they're looking at the false "picture" before their eyes. That's not going to help LITF.

If those of us who are seeing healing for Foggy, can inject a few positive comments, here and there, on the main board, when we see negative posts about him, maybe we can uplift some of those people w/o getting into trouble.

Isn't it interesting, that when I try to post positive over there about LITF, they tell me to come over here, yet they allow the sad ramblings to go on and on!

Did you all notice that when the letters "LITF" are rearrranged, they become "LIFT"! ...which is what we must do "LIFT" our thought to healing for "LITF"!...YES, LORETTA A GREAT MANY OF US DID...THANK YOU..."

"Lost in the Fog, ... remains his normal, aggressive self in his stall at Golden Gate Fields."

I know how confused you must feel, but as long as he's not in pain, let's affirm that he stay that way. Health and harmony is the Truth of being -- not disease and inharmony.

His owners, of course, have the final say, but if he continues to feel good, then maybe they will be patient. No one wants an animal to suffer; but Foggy is not suffering. Just because they think that adverse conditions could arise in a couple of weeks, that does not need to occur, because that is NOT OCCURRING IN GOD'S PERFECT UNIVERSE WHICH IS WHERE FOGGY REALLY LIVES.

Jesus said if we don't doubt or fear, we could "move mountains". If we even so much as worry that 2 wks. might be all he has...then we could cause that "picture" to appear. There's probably a lot of fear thought among Foggy's people anyway, so let us focus on removing their fear with our affirmations of God's Healing Power, restoring Foggy to health. In God's Universe, Foggy is not having a problem at all, it's just in our human sense of things, that we're presented with this "false picture" of God's creation. Let us REVERSE that "false picture" by understanding spiritually that Foggy is PERFECT because he is a reflection of God, who is PERFECT. Nothing outside of God's Loving Protection can touch Foggy.

There was probably a lot of fear thought surrounding Alcor, the polar bear. Anesthesia is hard on animals, even young ones. I think if Alcor had had the huge amount of positive, holy, healing thought directed toward him that Barbaro has had, I believe the outcome would have been different. Alcor surely sensed the fear and worry surrounding him. We must prevent fear and worry thoughts from flowing in Foggy's direction. We must "see" the healing for him, just as we have for Bobby. Even Bobby is not "out of the woods", so we can't let our guard down for him either.

So don't get discouraged, no matter what the reports say. As long as Foggy is comfortable, his people will probably be willing to fight for his life. I wonder if we should/could send emails to them with our healing thoughts based on the Bible (most people are Christian); our thoughts could well support them and help to remove the fear they're experiencing, which is so critical for healing for Foggy, because the most important thought, is that which surrounds him, which he will sense. If the thought is good, healing, and positive, he will react to that. If the thought is negative, depressed, and sad, he will react to that. Let's surround Foggy with HEALING THOUGHTS.

Lost in the Fog 'Not Done Yet,' Gilchrist Says
      by Jack Shinar

      8/27/2006

Lost in the Fog wins the 2005 King's Bishop at Saratoga.
      Order This Photo
      Photo: Skip Dickstein
Less than a week ago, trainer Greg Gilchrist said that it was "the bottom of the ninth" for his champion sprinter Lost in the Fog, diagnosed with terminal cancer. But at his Golden Gate Fields stable Thursday, the rally caps were out.
Returning to his barn after spending the previous five days in Florida for the Ocala Breeders' yearling auction, Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog is being treated in his stall with medications designed to reduce the size of two football sized tumors found in his spleen and beneath his spine along his back, as well as a third, smaller mass. The trainer said he is encouraged by the 4-year-old colt's responsiveness.

"This horse is not done yet," he said. "We are trying to shrink the tumors if that would be possible. If we can shrink them 50 percent, there's a chance we can remove them (surgically). It's a long shot but long shots happen all the time in this game. It's something to hang on to. We're not dead in the water yet."

It was almost exactly a year ago that an unbeaten Lost in the Fog romped to a 4 3/4-length win in the King's Bishop (gr. I) at Saratoga for his ninth straight win to give Gilchrist and owner Harry Aleo their first grade I triumph. Lost in the Fog stretched his winning streak to 10 before losing for the first time in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Belmont Park on Oct. 29.

Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog, who returned to the stable Aug. 20 after a week at the University of California at Davis' Large Animal Clinic, is "doing fine and holding his weight well."

He said the popular colt with the oddball blaze has been given walks outside his stall and has been happily enjoying the carrots, apples and other things sent to the barn by admirers. The get-well cards, e-mail wishes and flower bouquets have been overwhelming, Gilchrist said.

"I finally took all the flowers up to the (administration) office and gave them to all the girls there," he said.

Lost in the Fog, while being maintained on low doses of pain reliever, "is doing much better than we thought he would," Gilchrist said. "He's in good spirits."

The trainer originally planned to allow the horse to live out his final days in familiar surroundings and to be cared for by those that know him best. Without giving into "false hope," he now thinks it could be some time before a decision to euthanize the colt might be necessary.

"He still has quality life ahead of him," Gilchrist said.

In particular, the horse enjoyed being reunited with his favorite human, groom Pascual Garcia.

"Everybody's glad he's back," Gilchrist said..."Everybody realizes the situation. But I won't let anybody get down. I refuse to allow any negativity. "We were outside when he tried to take my arm off this morning,"

I am assuming that the additional tests included evaluation of Foggy's ability to handle chemo (white blood count, liver enzymes, etc), and possibly a chemo panel where they challenge the biopsy cells against various chemos and look for inhibition of growth. I read they are trying dexamethasone. Maybe dex looked the best in the panel.

That being said, I think is it very encouraging that they are trying something to shrink the tumors (and hopefully prevent further matastasis) and to boost his immune system.

From what I can understand, animals don't always respond to chemo the same way humans do. It doesn't necessarily debilitate them or make them sick, etc.

So I'm praying that Foggy responds well to the treatment and stays happy and comfortable and feisty until he is
        well again...

I want to add my thoughts about Foggy.

The latest news about Foggy shows that they are giving him Dexamethasone to try and shrink the tumors. While I am grateful that they are trying to save his life, I am worried about the use of Dex to shrink the tumors.

I have been involved with horses since 1963, I grew up in eastern Pa. on the A show circuit with Michael and many other famous Hunter and Jumper Riders. I was a top groom and then a barn Manager first on the East coast and then for several top Midwest Hunter trainers until 2000 when I burned out. (too many long days and alot of traveling).

I have seen first hand what Dex can do to a horse, and I want you all to be aware that it can cause Laminitis. I have first hand knowledge of Dex causing over 50 horses to suffer from Laminitis during my 37 years experience. The bad news is that every horse reacts differently to this drug. Some horses will receive it time and time again with no sign of laminitis and then another horse can shows signs of Laminitis after only a few times of having the medication administered.

I pray that Foggy will be one to not be affected, however I want all of you to be aware that this is a side affect of this drug.

I think that all of the positive evergy coming from this site for both Bobby and Foggy and all the horses in the world is wonderful!
