***********FINDING A FOLKHERO IN BARBARO***********

Once upon a time, in 1938, came the makings of a legend named Seabiscuit.
He exemplified America's struggle during the Great Depression and
became a symbol of Hope to everyone because they clearly understood their
struggles of heart and spirit to overcome the worst hardships. Here was a runt,
an imperfect blacksheep thoroughbred who showed the world the championed
underdog can win! The unforgettable lesson taught is -- the heart has
deep untapped potential to beat unbelievable odds in adversity's face, if
lovingly cared for, despite given terrible circumstances.
Seabiscuit proved that struggling Americans could beat those odds too!
He became their symbol of Hope for the 20th Century. Soon, there would
come another folkhero with his own legend in the making for 21st Century
America.

Fast Forward 68 years to 2006. Again, Americans are struggling to put
their families' lives back together after catastrophic natural disasters
ongoing and a war that divides us. Along comes our folkhero Barbaro who -- with
shattered leg, 5 surgeries, temporary complications from infection --
unites us as his team to work together harder for good. Barbaro's will to
survive gives us all back our faith in God and Hope in mankind's caring and
sharing attitude to improve life for others.

Self and differences put aside, resting from our struggles, we once
again see the same ignited Light of Hope rekindled in giving our Special
Barbaro a second chance to live comfortably. This same mindset is what built and
made America strong. Today, this attitude prevails in our 'Love Marks' for
Barbaro who returns LOVE one hundredfold like Seabiscuit did years ago.

As history repeats claiming her folkhero, we realize all folkheros
appeal to us because they make positive changes and influence people to act.
They bring out the best of human nature. See how Barbaro positively
impacted others in just weeks. New path is being pioneered with cutting edge veterinary
medicine and care for all animals with the BARBARO FUND (
www.vet.upenn.edu).

Horse Racing and Track Officials are seriously reviewing and changing their practices, taking action to prevent serious injuries to jockeys and horses alike. Did you know weekly 35-some jockeys are injured? In past two weeks alone, too many champion horses were seriously injured (with 2 being put down) too! The above incidents have led E.P.O.N.A. (Equine Protection Of North America) to step up to the plate in Epping, New Hampshire. They are now a pipeline for the Anti-slaughter of Horses Bill (www.eponarescue.org linked to www.saplonline.org, legislative director Chris Heyde, Society for Animal Protection Legislation). And, E.P.O.N.A. assists in direct adoptions of premarin mare foals and retired thoroughbred racing horses across America and Canada. While Barbaro recovers, immense obstacles are being overcome as Americans recover. His struggle and our struggles become easier to understand. He is just like one of us. That is what grabs our hearts so much. In the immortal words of Seabiscuit's trainer Tom Smith and owner Charles Howard, "You NEVER THROW AWAY a whole life just because it gets banged up a bit." We believe Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, are of the same mindset including Dr. Dean Richardson and his medical team. Barbaro's same fiercely, fighting spirit and champion heart inspire us to go that extra mile for him while he does the same for us. Just as Seabiscuit helped fix his broken down family and American hopes, Barbaro fixes the broken parts in all of us. Barbaro is giving us a second chance back! So, Barbaro, we will sit and rest awhile with you when our hearts and souls get weary. We will sing softly these words from R. Loveland and B. Graham
-- "You Raise Me Up" -- to you! "You raise me (us) up so I (we) can stand on mountains. You raise us up to walk on stormy seas. I (we) are strong when you are on my (our) shoulders. You raise me (us all) to more than I (we) can be," You are the right folkhero and a legend in the making. Our prayer, may all see the living proof you are our folkhero answering America's call to act. We salute you Big Guy for showing us what we can really do, together, beating seemingly unbeatable odds. Keep winning this new kind of race against time. Blessings and Love heading your way, today, and every day!!! Dedicated to Barbaro, The Jacksons & extended families, loyal fans, Woolley et al, Michael, Peter, Edgar, Dr. Richardson, Barbaro's care team & staff, plus everyone who wants to know "Why does Barbaro Grab Us So?" with special thanks to Shannon & Zeena for asking the question.

Yes, Barbaro is truly awe inspiring! That is why we wrote this tribute, not just for him but others like him including Mike Rea & his family too!!! Thank you. People keep those ideas and positive feedback coming. Blessings to all of you. We appreciate you posting our article on your website along with Tim Woolley placing it upfront on his website with Barbaro's updates(www.timwoolleyracing.com). And special thank you to you Debra. You did a fantastic job displaying words that hopefully will continue to spread like wildfire and make us act more responsibly towards our best animals and human friends alike. Remember, everyone can lend a hand to make a real difference no matter who or where you are! PS. AMERDON's PRESIDENT, Sharone Morrison wrote she sent BARBARO a whole case of Rapid Response Formula F. He was started back on it Friday AM July 14, 2006 with 2 8oz doses daily. It's loaded with powerhouse nutrients & helps to fight infections. Hopefully, Springtime Incorporated's President, Dennis Hampt will also help Barbaro recover well with a generous donation of his Springtime Difference Joint Health Formula & nutritious Spirulina Wafers--Yum!!! Will keep Barbaro fans posted! (www.AMERDON.com;sharone@ameridon.com or amerdonter@aol.com) (www.springtimeinc.com;feedback@springtimeinc.com).

I don't know if I can put into words why Barbaro means so much to me. He is a beautiful horse and I really felt he would/could be our triple crown winner. I knew his leg was broke the minute I saw the instant replay of the race. It broke my heart.... for him and for horse lovers around the world. I expected him to be put down then and there.... the side of racing I dislike so much. My spirits were lifted when I found out the owners were willing to do all they could to help him. Then the fabulous care the New Bolton Center has given him...my hopes were raised. I guess my faith in mankind was raised as well. I can't express how elated I am that so many have given so much to help this fantastic animal...when it would have been easier to put him down. I think the world is so full of bad news that when we see such a touching story ...about how much the owners and Vets have given him...we just have fallen into the ranks with all of them. Hoping against hope that in some small way we can contribute to Barbaro's recovery and make a miracle happen. He is a hero, a fighter, we can see that he wants to live. People like myself just hope our thoughts and prayers will help him and all of the people that are working with him. I guess we feel that by doing so...we can be part of the miracle that we are all praying will happen. Some say I am obsessed by Barbaro...ahhh...so be it. I would do anything to help this horse. I send emails daily, I have sent cards, I read about him online every free moment.I am getting ready to send a fruit basket to him...I don't care who eats it...the janitor, medical staff, the owners...or Barbaro. I just want all of them to know we support them 200% in their effort for this beautiful animal. I guess this isn't to far out of the ordinary for me....I would mortgage my house to give my dog the best care in the world.

        ****Seabiscuit To Barbaro****
(Special poem for Barbaro's Campaign to Make a Difference--inspired by
Barbaro & Mike Rea, by Wm & CL)

        GO BOY GO!
        Rest if you must--
        Lord heal our great Barbaro,
        who's won a nation's trust.

        Heart only like one other,
        Seabiscuit's claim to fame--
        There is but just another,
        Barbaro's his name.

        Living far greater,
        Than one could hope for--
        His spirit, God is creator,
        More than Life's core!

He is destined for much more.
        Strengthen him night and day--
What is needed to rest and snore.
        Show his shining spirit today,
A living testament to hero lore!

You are the one to beat this,
        With loving care and caress--
        Believe Blessed with a kiss,
        Lucky Swiftness your harness!

        Make believers of doubters.
        Great joy to be heard--
        Help Campaign all ye shouters.
        Help spread the good word!

        Not just for Barbaro's fight,
        But for Mike Rea's too--
May both heal day and night,
Richly blessed by all of you!

        Recovery's road may be long,
But tender care is there too--
        Keep sending those donations.
        Each and everyone of you.

Lend a hand to a friend,
        Help a neighbor in need.
        Hold up another, don't offend,
Is the word of this noble steed!

        Contribute your time,
        Your money, your hands--
        Be it poetic rhyme.
        Or prayers from all lands.

        Expert minds can only wonder,
        Seeing Barbaro's will to survive--
        Marvel at MIRACLES we'll ponder,
Makes us thankful we are alive.

        GO BARBARO GO,
Listen, rest, soak up our love!
        You've grabbed us so--
Heaven's gift to us from above.

        Whispering your wise ways,
        Bring commonsense to reign--
        Uplifting our hopes these days,
Lead us safely back home again.

Forever thanks to Alex & Mike,
        Allowing others a sharing mind--
For blessed news raising the spike,
Focused on good and bad left behind--
Go BARBARO Go -- we all love you so!

        Dear Daniel,

With an entire nation captivated by BARBARO, believe it! Reviewing Jason Zinoman's summary on Barbaro and his adoring public, Hollywood pays attention to these sports reports. "From the Final Furlong" -- Laura Hillenbrand, who is probably the best biographer of Seabiscuit, has compared Barbaro with Seabiscuit as joined kindred spirits. The media is now understanding why America needed a hero in the Great Depression of the 1930's and found it in Seabiscuit.

With life overwhelmingingly hard today, Americans have reidentified with the hero in Barbaro. If Barbaro can make it through another day, so can we. The parallel is eerily similiar though somewhat different.

KNOW Laura Hillenbrand has fallen in love Barbaro's Charisma/spirit and will likely write his biography worthy of another GREAT MOVIE~~~Wait and See, it will happen!!! You just can't help but love this horse...

Barbaro commands one's attention with grit and stamina not seen in almost 70 years. More and more people coming to realize this is one extraordinary horse that demands our respect and love.

On a blog board, saw someone had picked already who was going to play Dr. Richardson -- Harrison Ford. Brian Dennehy plays Roy Jackson or Michael Matz. Guess we'll just have to wait & see. For now, pray Barbara gets stronger so we can have him in the movie as a special tribute--as himself RECOVERED!!!

I have no word to describe my feeling! Barbaro has opened a new life for me, you see, I have always had a cat or a dog in my life and LOVED them so very much. When I lost HOBO (my cat) I sort of blocked our any and all pets. But since Barbaro has been ill, my heart has opened up not only to him but to the idea of having another pet in my live. They give so much more than they get from us humans. Barbaro has really touched my heart and also my soul, as to how I live my everyday life. He has brought out the spirit in me to fight and never give up. My wish for Barbaro is that God heals him and keeps him happy, because there is no other that should be in Gods healing hands! He has united us as a Nation of Love and Healing, and PRAYER. God Bless Barbaro, his teams of Doctors and his loving family. Thank you for this chance to express my feeling for Barbaro and life.

      God's Speed to you all!

        Dear C Nichols,
You and millions of other pet owners (us included) have lost a pet--that one golden precious pet--you love so much & is part your family. It's hard to cope & overcome your inner numbness! Even my husband choked up at the loss of our 15 year-old Jimbo.

So, we searched far and wide and low and behold, we found him reincarnated in another puppy who possessed the identical same spirit--hard to find but graftifying when we did. Traveled 16 hours to get him in Canada.

At seven-weeks-old and one look I knew we were given our second chance with JB. He became our first boy's namesake (my dad's name too) in his honor. Never regretted and learned to change things for the better.

Soon the painful loss faded but I still remember our old boy and treasure each day we have with our new guy. Like Barbaro, he gives us strength to look at each day anew.

With Barbaro recovering better and beating those odds (with all those prayers and lit candles), I'm thankful God has given these magnificent creatures to awaken the very soul in all of us and be better caregivers.

We all learn from our mistakes of ignorance and we are not exception. Growing up around horses and marrying into a family who was involved in heading the Delaware State Racing Track commission, we as a second generation now have that opportunity to make things better.

For our family, this is Barbaro's Legacy unquestioningly tugging at all men and women's hearts to do the right thing--that is our hero Barbaro whispering softly the winds of change now blowing smack in our faces.

This horse with Seabiscuit's legendary fight strengths us all no matter how frail we think we are -- everybody has a gifted part so we can once again be made whole. If we don't correct and learn from our mistakes then our humanity is lost forever.

Barbaro is living proof showing all things are possible when the US-- along with England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Canada and others--can be humbled by prayer to save a natural/national treasure like our Barbaro. When God created horses he created the winds of heaven in them so....Blessings to you C. Nichols keep in touch with your heart and soul. Happy to see Barbaro has brought out your hidden fighter's spirit too. Welcome aboard!!!

A Hero of a Different Color
(Inspired by the posted words of Kathy - 8 years old
"Barbaro, I know you didn't mean to be a hero, but you are.")

By Gloria (submitted by Cle for Gloria)

Innocence, youth, such talent and heart,
You were still growing up, and doing your part
To run for the roses and prizes more rare,
To abandon yourself to the thrill of each dare.
You bestowed upon Peter the rides of his life,
And your trainer and owners, their dreams brought to life.
You romped and we witnessed your own special gifts,
But the depth of your soul had yet to be glimpsed.
Living your life, so playful yet poised,
Finding the best, in yourself...and in us,
Once again victory lay in your path,
When almost at random, life changed in a flash.
But then, like the champion we knew you to be,
You held yourself calm, with sweet dignity,
And though you were hurting, you sensed and obeyed
A voice from within that said "Trust them...this way."
You managed to triumph when no one could say
For certain that you would stay with us that day.
Your spirit adapted, your heart said "Don't quit",
And now you are learning each day bit by bit.
Do horses have humor? I think we could say
That you certainly do, or it sure looks that way.
Intelligence shows as you patiently fight,
And your "wicked bright" mind will help make it all right.
As passionate, competent people help guide,
You will find your way home, with love by your side.
Yes, the way may be long, and the going is slow,
But your spirit prevails, and that we all know.
Your legacy now will be different than planned,
Your journey will lead more of us to a stand.
Your destiny met with your head held up high,
Your shining example no one can deny.
Your purpose now changed, or at least it so seems,
From running and chasing a Triple Crown dream,
To entering now a new race we can share,
With nobility, decency, courage and care.
No effort too small, no vision too large,
Renewed interest and focus, we each can "take charge."
Emboldened to take just one step at a time,
These steps all together can help change mankind.
May we learn from your journey what we need to know,
And then pass it on, to inspire and grow.
To help others in need, both your kind and ours,
To be champions - like you - as we fight for a cause.
Unaware of your influence, blissfully free,
And living your life with such clear purity,
You "didn't mean to be" a hero, we know it is true,
But Barbaro, you are. And for that we thank you.
